    Read Later

The story of Subedar Major Sanjay Kumar is one of unparalleled bravery and unwavering dedication to the nation. A living recipient of the Param Vir Chakra, India’s highest military honor, he is a symbol of courage and selfless service. The Param Vir Chakra is awarded for the highest acts of valor in the presence of the enemy, and Subedar Major Sanjay Kumar’s actions exemplify its essence. His gallantry during the Kargil War of 1999, particularly in the intense battle for Point 4875, remains an inspiration for generations of soldiers and citizens alike.

This battle was one of the fiercest confrontations of the war, as Point 4875 was a strategically vital peak that overlooked National Highway 1A, a crucial supply route. The Indian Army’s success in recapturing it played a decisive role in turning the tide of the war. It was in this treacherous terrain, against a well-entrenched enemy, that Kumar’s extraordinary courage and unwavering determination earned him the nation’s highest military honor.

    Early Life and Struggles

Born on 3 March 1976 in Bilaspur, Himachal Pradesh, Kumar belonged to a humble background. His parents, Durga Ram and Bhag Devi, instilled in him the values of hard work and perseverance. After completing his schooling in Bilaspur, he moved to New Delhi, where he worked as a taxi driver. His ambition to serve in the Indian Army faced multiple setbacks as his application was rejected three times. However, his unwavering determination paid off when he was finally selected to join the army. On 26 June 1996, he was enlisted in the 13 Jammu and Kashmir Rifles (JAK RIF), marking the beginning of an illustrious military career.

The Jammu and Kashmir Rifles, the regiment that Kumar joined, has a distinguished history. Established in 1821 by Gulab Singh, one of Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s most capable generals, the regiment played a significant role in both World War I and II. It was later absorbed into the Indian Army as a separate regiment and has since participated in various conflicts, including the Indo-Pak wars and the Kargil War. The regiment’s legacy of valor was further cemented during the Kargil conflict, where the 13 JAK RIF demonstrated extraordinary bravery.

The Kargil War and the Capture of Point 4875

The Kargil War of 1999 was a defining moment in India’s military history. In a well-orchestrated intrusion, Pakistani soldiers and militants occupied strategic heights in the Kargil sector, posing a serious threat to National Highway 1A. In response, the Indian Army launched Operation Vijay to reclaim these crucial positions. Among the many battles fought, the capture of Point 4875 in the Mushkoh Valley was pivotal.

On 4 July 1999, Rifleman Sanjay Kumar, serving as one of the leading scouts in the attack on Flat Top, a key position on Point 4875, displayed extraordinary courage. As the assault progressed, the enemy forces opened fire from fortified sangars, stalling the Indian advance. Undeterred, Rifleman Kumar charged at the enemy position with complete disregard for his own safety. In the ensuing hand-to-hand combat, he single-handedly killed three enemy soldiers. Despite sustaining severe injuries, he continued his assault, forcing the remaining enemy troops to abandon their position. In a remarkable act of bravery, he seized an abandoned Universal Machine Gun (UMG) and turned it against the retreating enemy, inflicting heavy casualties.

His selfless bravery provided a crucial advantage to his unit, enabling them to successfully capture Flat Top. Even while bleeding profusely, Rifleman Kumar refused evacuation and continued fighting, inspiring his comrades to push forward. His determination and fearless spirit turned the tide of battle in India’s favor.

    Recognition and Promotion

For his extraordinary valor, Rifleman Sanjay Kumar was awarded the Param Vir Chakra, the highest military honor in India. His citation recognized his “conspicuous gallantry and indomitable spirit” in the face of the enemy. His actions not only contributed to the success of the mission but also epitomized the ethos of the Indian Army.

Over the years, he continued to serve with distinction, and in February 2022, he was promoted to the rank of Subedar Major. His journey from a young aspirant facing multiple rejections to a decorated war hero stands as a testament to perseverance and dedication.

    Legacy

Subedar Major Sanjay Kumar’s story is one of grit, valor, and an unyielding commitment to the nation. His heroics in the Kargil War have inspired countless young Indians to join the armed forces. His unwavering resolve in the face of adversity and his selfless service exemplify the highest traditions of the Indian Army.

His journey serves as a beacon of courage, reminding us of the sacrifices made by soldiers to safeguard the nation’s sovereignty. The tale of his bravery on the icy heights of Kargil will forever be etched in India’s military history, immortalizing him as one of the finest warriors the country has ever produced.
