The Delhi election results were announced on Saturday, and as predicted by the exit polls, the BJP won 48 seats, while the AAP has secured 22 seats. Arvind Kejriwal, the convener of the AAP, lost his seat in the New Delhi constituency to BJP leader Parvesh Verma by a margin of around 3,000 votes.
Kejriwal’s political landscape has changed significantly over the past ten years since 2013. Back then, he gained strong support from the middle and lower classes through initiatives like free electricity, water, and bus services for women. However, the BJP’s election strategies, which included highlighting the arrest of the sitting Chief Minister of Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal, led to a decline in AAP’s influence. This shift ultimately allowed Parvesh Verma to rise against him.
Likely to be the next CM?
After defeating Arvind Kejriwal, the individual known as the “Giant Slayer” emerges as one of the top contenders for the position of Chief Minister. This is largely due to his political background; his father, Sahib Singh Verma, served as Chief Minister of Delhi, while his uncle, Azad Singh, was the mayor of the North Delhi Municipal Corporation and even ran for the assembly election in 2013.
Who is Parvesh Sahib Singh Verma?
Parvesh Verma, born in 1977, is a prominent figure in Delhi’s political landscape, largely due to his family background in politics. He completed his education at Delhi Public School, RK Puram, and Kirori Mal College at Delhi University. Additionally, he holds an MBA degree from the Fore School of Management.
He entered into politics in 2013 by securing his place in the Delhi Legislative Assembly from Mehrauli constituency. Further, in 2014 he won west Delhi’s parliamentary seat and in 2019 he secured his victory with a margin of 5.87 lakh.
Pravesh’s Campaigning
Entering into the 2025 Delhi election campaigning, Verma pointed at AAP’s policies and administrative performances, and the unfulfilled promise of cleaning up Yamuna and started a slogan saying, “Remove Kejriwal and Save the Nation”.
Verma went ahead and posted posters of Kejriwal saying “Mujhe vote mat dena maine 2025 tak Yamuna nai saaf ki”. Additionally, He said pointing at Kejriwal’s government on multiple occasions, “Many people in JJ clusters don’t have free water and electricity… I would say this openly. Whoever is getting clean water and zero electricity bills, please vote for Kejriwal, and whoever isn’t, please vote for BJP,”
The Family Reacts
As the giant win approached, family members of Verma seemed filled with gratitude for the public for voting for Verma. His daughters said, “We thank the people of New Delhi for their support. The people of Delhi will never make the mistake of giving a second chance to a person who runs the government by telling lies,”
The sister of the victorious Pravesh Verma said taking a dig at the Aam Admi Party’s bus policy for women, “We worked in those areas where we needed a door-to-door campaign. Women are not safe in Delhi, so what will they do with a free bus service? The women saw hope in the BJP,” she added that she is happy as an elder sister, the women of Delhi constituency are also happy as they have shown trust in Pravesh.
