Mauritian Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam announced that, on his invitation, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Mauritius as ‘Guest of Honor’ for the country’s 57th National Day celebrations. The official visit is scheduled for March 11-12.
Addressing the Parliament on Friday, Ramgoolam expressed his deep appreciation for Modi accepting the invitation despite his busy international schedule which recently included visits to Paris and the United States.
“I have great pleasure to inform the House that following my invitation, Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India, has kindly agreed to be the Guest of Honour for our National Day celebrations. It is indeed a singular privilege for our country, to host such a distinguished personality who is doing us this honour, despite his very tight schedule and his recent visits to Paris and the United States,” Ramgoolam said.
PM Modi recently concluded his visit to the United States where he held a joint press conference at the White House with the US President Donald Trump. Prior to that he co-chaired the AI-summit in Paris with French President Emmanuel Macron.
Mauritius National Day
Mauritius celebrates its National Day every on March 12 commemorating its independence from British colonial rule in 1968 and its transition to a republic in 1992. The celebrations typically include colorful parades and a military display along with a flag-hoisting ceremony.
Modi’s visit is expected to add a new dimension to this year’s celebrations. His presence not only signifies India’s commitment to Mauritius but also highlights the broader geopolitical importance of Indian partnerships in the Indian Ocean region.
India Mauritius bilateral ties
Diplomatic relations between India and Mauritius were established in 1948, even before Mauritius gained independence from British rule in 1986. Mauritius harbors a significant chunk of Indian-origin population, nearly 70% of Mauritius’ 1.2 million citizens, which has aided in fostering the unique partnership.
The ties date back to colonial times when around half a million Indian indentured laborers were brought to the island during the 18th and 19th centuries, most of whom later permanently settled in Mauritius. The first batch of these workers arrived in Mauritius on 2 November, 1834, a day which is now observed as ‘Aapravasi Diwas’ (Aapravasi roughly translates to immigrant).
A pivotal moment in the historical ties between the two countries occurred when Mahatma Gandhi briefly stayed in Mauritius from 29 October to 15 November, 1901, on his way back to India from South Africa. During his stay, Gandhi left a profound impact on the Indian labourers by teaching them about the importance of education, political empowerment, and maintaining strong ties with India. In his honour, Mauritius celebrates the National Day on March 12, coinciding with the date Gandhi’s iconic Dandi Salt March in 1930.
