The ongoing tensions between the administration and farmers escalated with farmer’s leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal fast-unto-death decision. With Jagjit Singh’s fast entering into the 24th day, the protest is now standing at some critical phase. The latest reports indicate that the health of Singh is getting worse. On the 24th day of the strike, Singh’s vitals are now unstable, which called for emergency medical assistance. Amid this situation, the protest stage has been temporarily shut down to focus on the deteriorating health conditions of Singh.
Health Conditions of Jagjit Singh Dallewal
The reports indicate that Singh collapsed and remained unconscious for 10 minutes before eventually gaining consciousness. Witnesses also reported that he vomited, further intensifying concerns about his health condition. Singh participated in the court proceedings virtually, but the bench refused to interact with him. Punjab Police is consistently convincing Dallewal to undergo medical examinations, but all their attempts were in vain.
On Wednesday, a team of doctors was sent back by protesting farmers. “We’ve been urging him to get checked, but he refuses. He’s elderly, a cancer patient, and hasn’t allowed any tests or intravenous fluids. Forcing him into a hospital could escalate tensions,” an official stated. On the other hand, upon hearing the deteriorating health news of Jagjit Singh, Supreme Court slammed Punjab and Haryana government for not admitting him to the hospital.
SC Cautioned Punjab Administration over Jagjit Singh Dallewal’s Health
The Supreme Court urged the Punjab administration to swiftly address the health situation of farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal. A bench comprising Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan warned Punjab Government about the consequences if anything happens to Singh. The Bench stated, “The entire state machinery will be held accountable if anything untoward occurs. Consider the serious consequences. Do not succumb to any pressure and take the necessary actions. Extraordinary circumstances demand extraordinary measures.”
Gurminder Singh, Advocate General of Punjab informed the Bench that, in response to the court’s previous order, meetings were arranged between Punjab authorities, a representative from the Centre, and Dallewal, during which the court’s concerns were communicated to him. However, Singh underlined that Dallewal refused to undergo medical tests or accept assistance, and the farmers declined to engage with the High-Powered Committee established by the court.
Additionally, the Supreme Court urged the farmers not to act under peer pressure and emphasized the importance of prioritizing Dallewal’s health. The court also highlighted that he must remain in good condition to continue advocating for his cause.
