As India basked in the glow of Diwali celebrations, the West was equally immersed in Halloween festivities. However, an unusual incident in Canada overshadowed the usual joy of Halloween night. A woman, dressed in a traditional salwar kameez, often associated wth Indian traditional attire, was caught on camera swiping candies intended for children in Ontario, Canada. The video of this incident quickly went viral, sparking a mix of amusement and controversy.

The woman was seen moving from house to house in the Cornell locality of Markham, Ontario, stealthily stealing sweets and even emptying bowls of treats set out for trick-or-treaters. This incident, which unfolded during the Halloween night celebrations, was captured on video and rapidly gained traction on social media. Harrison Faulkner, a media personality and host of The Faulkner Show, shared the clip on X (formerly Twitter), captioning it, “Trick or Steal spotted in Markham, Ontario last night. What is going on?” The post has since garnered nearly 800,000 views, sparking a flurry of comments and reactions from users.

The video prompted a wide range of reactions. Many social media users speculated about the woman’s ethnicity, with some claiming she is of Indian descent. However, these assertions remain unverified. The footage shows her systematically raiding candy bowls, which has left many viewers both amused and baffled.

While some comments were light-hearted and humorous, others took a darker turn. A few users made racially charged remarks, which highlighted a concerning trend of xenophobia and cultural stereotyping. One user commented, “Ladies and gentlemen, this is one microcosm of what happens when a high trust society is flooded with low-quality people from low-trust societies.”

Another user commented, “Not even China is like this, bro. It’s literally only these people. Even Arabs have better standards. It’s insane. The whole culture is built upon how to screw each other over & scam for personal gain.”

This incident, though seemingly trivial, opens up a broader conversation about cultural perceptions and the impact of social media on public opinion. The woman’s attire, a salwar kameez, is traditionally worn in South Asia, which led to assumptions about her ethnicity. This highlights how quickly cultural symbols can be misinterpreted and lead to stereotyping.

Markham city councillor Andrew Keyes released a statement explaining that the woman involved “suffers from a mental health disorder.” He expressed the family’s deep regret and apologized for the incident. Keyes mentioned that the stolen items would be returned to the affected families and encouraged those impacted to contact him for assistance in connecting with the woman’s family.

“Also, these events and the social media attention they have generated have caused the family an enormous amount of distress, and it would be very much appreciated if people could please tone down the rhetoric, stop posting and sharing these videos, and if you’re able, please remove any posts you may have distributed,” Keyes further added.

The rapid spread of the video underscores the power of social media in shaping narratives and influencing public perception. While it can be a tool for humor and community engagement, it also has the potential to amplify negative stereotypes. The incident in Markham serves as a reminder of the need for responsible social media use and the importance of fostering inclusive and respectful online communities.
