In a tragic incident, two people, including one Australia-based NRI, died, and one was left severely injured when the taxi, in which they were traveling, collided with a tractor-trolley loaded with sugarcane. The collision took place at the Sugar Mill Flyover on National Highway 44 in Phagwara, Punjab.
Identification of Deceased
The incident resulted in the death of two people. Including NRI Dilpreet Singh, aged 28, and the taxi driver named Yugraj Masih, aged 38, the police reported on Friday.
Gurinder Kaur, mother of NRI Dilpreet Singh, sustained severe injuries and is currently in critical condition. Notably, the deceased had been in Australia for a decade and was returning home on Wednesday night to reunite with his family.
How Did the Accident Occur?
The accident occurred while Dilpreet was travelling from Amritsar Airport to Ludhiana. According to the reports, the taxi attempted to overtake the tractor-trolley, resulting in a collision.
The Phagwara City Police have been investigating the case, and an FIR has been filed on the statement of the youth’s father, Harpreet Singh.
Deceased Family’s Statement
Harpreet Singh, resident of 447-D Model Town, Ludhiana, said his younger son, Dilpreet Singh, had been living in Melbourne, Australia, for the last 10 years. His mother, Gurinder Kaur, had gone to Australia to meet Dilpreet and bring him back home.
He told the police that his wife called him around 9:15 pm on Wednesday, informing him that they had just left the airport in Amritsar and were in a taxi. The other call he received was from his wife around 11:33 pm, who told him about the incident.
Kaur sustained severe injuries and has been admitted to Phagwara’s Civil Hospital, later was shifted to DMC, Ludhiana, after her condition got more critical.
She got multiple injuries, including a broken jaw, ASI reported, who visited Kaur on Thursday.
Recent Developments in the Case
Meanwhile, a case has been registered against the tractor’s driver on the complaint of Harpreet Singh under the provisions of the law. The tractor-trolley has been seized by the authorities, and the driver is yet to be arrested.
