In an unforeseen incident, at least three people, including two women and a watchman, died, while a few others were left injured following a gas explosion that occurred at a pharmaceutical company in the Sangli district of Maharashtra.
Notably, the incident took place on Friday, November 23, 2024, at the Myanmar Chemical Company in Shalgaon MIDC of Kadegoan Tehsil. In a preliminary investigation, the authorities have said that a reactor at the fertilizer plant exploded, releasing chemical fumes. The incident has affected around approx. 12 people, including 3 of them who have died.
While 9 of them are in critical condition, receiving treatment at the hospital, as reported by the senior inspector of the Kadegaon police station, Sangram Shewale.
It occurred due to some technical glitches. A team of forensic departments also reached at the site to investigate the matter. Some major investigations are still underway.
According to the Sangli superintendent of police, Sandip Ghuge, the gas exploded is suspected to be ammonia. Among the injuries, seven individuals have been admitted to Sahyadri Hospital in Karad, and five of them are in the ICU, the officials further reported.
The two women who lost their lives were identified as Suchita Uthale aged 50 and Neelam Rethrekar aged 26 from Yatgaon in Sangli district and Masur in Satara district, respectively.
Recent Factory Explosions in Maharashtra
Prior to this, another incident took place earlier on Thursday, November 21, 2024, at a factory near Tarapur Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) in Palghar district.
Earlier in September this year, a gas leak at a chemical company in Ambernath of Thane District was reported. In May, a reactor blast at a chemical factory in the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) in the area of Dombivli in Thane district claimed 13 lives, and in June this year, there was a massive fire reported in another chemical factory.
This explosion originally resulted from a boiler blast, causing massive destruction to nearby factories and homes. Tragically, in this incident, at least 9 people lost their lives, while 64 people were injured.
These above incidents witnessed a major increase in factory explosions in the Maharashtra district this year and need to be addressed. It also highlights the critical need for taking stringent safety protocols, especially in industrial areas and nearby incidents.
