Trumps’ Tariffs could not be Curbed: Stresses Reciprocal Tariffs

    Read Later

Prime Minister Narendra Modi concluded his two-day trip to the United States, where he participated in bilateral discussions with President Donald Trump, on 14th Feb. 2025.

Both of them talked about several important topics including trade, tariffs, the extradition of 26/11 suspects, the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, the acquisition of F-35 fighter fighters, and India’s border dispute with China. PM Modi established the “MEGA partnership” by highlighting the US and India’s common dedication to global leadership and economic growth. PM Modi and President Trump had discussions on many topics during their bilateral talks.

Bilateral Trade Goal: India and the US aim to increase trade to $500 billion by 2030.

Strong Partnership: PM Modi said that MAGA (Make America Great Again) and MIGA (Make India Great Again) together create a ‘mega partnership’ for progress.

New Trade Deal Coming: Both countries will soon finalise a trade agreement to work together on development, production, and technology sharing.

Closer Ties: The visit showed that India and the US are strengthening their relationship in business and other areas.

India’s Future Growth: PM Modi linked India’s fast growth to its goal of becoming a developed country by 2047.

India to Get Advanced US Aircraft

Donald Trump’s announcement that the US would sell India F-35 stealth fighter fighters would be a major boost to defense cooperation and put India in the select group of nations that operate the cutting-edge aircraft.  “We will be increasing military sales to India by billions of dollars beginning this year. Additionally, we’re clearing the path for the eventual delivery of F-35 stealth aircraft to India,” Trump stated. Earlier this month, Asia’s largest aerospace and defense expo, Aero India, hosted the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II, the most widely used fifth-generation fighter plane.

How India and US Plan to Close Trade Difference?

India plans to purchase US energy for over $25 billion in the near future, which will significantly strengthen the energy sector of the country. “We bought roughly $15 billion worth of US energy output last year. In the near future, there’s a significant likelihood that this amount may rise to as much as $25 billion,” the minister of external affairs stated during a press conference.

The two leaders’ discussions also centered on boosting energy purchases, which may be crucial in reducing the trade imbalance between the US and India. According to officials, increased energy commerce is quite likely to occur and may help close the bilateral trade difference.

US President Donald Trump also offered PM Modi to be a mediator on the issue of India-China border dispute, urging both the nations to de-escalate the situation.  “When I look to India, I do see the border skirmishes, which are rather brutal, and I suppose they still go on. That should be stopped, so I would love to help if I can,” Trump stated. No Change in Tariff Rate: PM Modi’s trip to the United States had no effect on Donald Trump’s recent decision to levy 25% tariffs on Indian steel and aluminum imports.

Instead, Trump stated that a “reciprocal approach” to tariffs would be preferred by the States. “At the moment, we are a reciprocating country. We will have the same arrangement whether it is from India or another country with low tariffs. Regardless of what India charges, we will charge them. We’re charging them whatever another nation charges,” Trump declared
