For ages, women were the target of gender biases. Whether in the field of education, job opportunities, or several societal matters, women’s equality has always been a matter of discussion. The recent advertisements of PM Navodaya Vidyalaya have garnered significant interest.
The ads related to job hiring in the school reflect systematic bias against women. Critics contend that schools are giving preference to certain demographics over others.
What are the Advertisements of Navodaya Vidyalaya?
This advertisement from one of the PM Navodaya Vidyalaya claims to give a matron position to women under a specific category. The eligibility criteria disclosed by the school:
- Martial status- Married females, widows, or divorcees Without Encumbrances
The point to be underlined here is widows or divorcees without encumbrances. The phrase refers to the women who lost their spouses through death (widows) or are legally separated (divorcees). Here without encumbrances indicate they should not have any burden that can hinder their work.
How is this Discriminatory?
This job offering advertisement can be seen as discriminatory to many other sections. This includes:
- Discrimination against unmarried women and,
- Discrimination against divorcees with encumbrances.
The intention behind this may be to support specific groups, but the effects of such things may be offensive or might hurt the sentiments of others.
Exclusion of Unmarried or Single Women
One of the most highlighted points in this hiring practice is not including unmarried or single women. Limiting the eligibility criteria based on marital status draws a line for the other sections, that may be valuable or skillful for the organization.
This also narrows the talent area and directs toward the direction that single women are less deserving or capable of recruitment offers.
Affirming Stereotypes
Emphasizing marital status feeds harmful stereotypes, doubting women’s roles in society. The strategy suggests that women are defined more by their relationship status rather than their individuality, qualifications, and abilities.
This way of thinking undercuts the advancements made toward gender equality,
Neglecting Other Backgrounds
Further adding to it, such criteria unintentionally favor a particular group. Whereas younger women from underprivileged families or families from different backgrounds may feel isolated. It creates a sense of self-distrust that they might not be fit for the opportunity.
Additionally, hiring only a particular group may result in a lack of diversity in the workplace.
Violation of Legal Considerations
Moreover, such practices also violate the anti-discrimination policies and laws. These rules are intended to support equal job offerings, regardless of a person’s gender, caste, creed, religion, marital status, or color. Employers engaging in such practices jeopardize their credibility and reputation in the marketplace. They also increase their risks for legal repercussions.
At last, we can only argue on the unfairness to the other sections of the society and giving privilege to only specific sections. The idea here is not to hurt the sentiments or target the married, widows, or divorcees, but to promote equality.
It is unfair to divorcees with encumbrances too, as their liability and claims should not be their score their skills. Judging people on this basis can bring differences within the communities. Let us know in the comments what you think about this. Do you support the idea of giving jobs to only married, widows, or divorcees without encumbrances?
