The budget session of the parliament starts with the address of President Draupadi Murmu and the session is going to have fiery discussions on the stampede that occurred at Maha Kumbh. Also questions will be raised regarding the Waqf bill.
A Meeting On Thursday
As the budget session starts, a meeting was held on Thursday that included representatives from all 36 parties where the parties vowed to raise questions on the Waqf bill and the stampede that occurred at Mahakumbh.
The parliamentary affairs minister Kiren Rijiju requested cooperation from all the parties during the session and stated that the advisory committee would choose the topics for the discussion. Cooperation has been sought as two MPs were injured during the last winter session. When asked about the Waqf bill, Rijiju said that it has been mentioned for the discussion. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on informed parties about the legislative agenda and also got inputs from them.
According to various sources, Singh also mentioned that the Uttar Pradesh government has ordered a probe into the stampede that happened at Pragyaraj recently.
Opposition Parties
The opposition parties such as Congress and Samajwadi Party on Thursday’s meeting criticized the functioning of a joint Parliamentary committee on the Waqf bill. Congress MP Jairam Ramesh has called it a farce on his X page.
“It has made a complete mockery of all parliamentary traditions and practices. Such committees used to be a force to be reckoned with — now they have been reduced to be a farce to be reckoned with,” he said on his X page.
Matters Of Discussion
The government has listed various other bills apart from Waqf for discussion in the parliament session. Those include banking laws and disaster management bills, immigration and foreign bills, finance bills, and coastal shipping bills.
As the last session saw a divide between the opposition parties over Adani, this time the parties will raise questions united as said by Congress’s Pramod Tiwari. He and the SP’s Ram Gopal Yadav jointly criticized the VIP movements claiming that it made the common pilgrims more inconvenient.
JDU’s Extension Claim
One of the BJP’s allies JDU has sought an extension in the tenure of JPC’s scrutinizing bills. BJP’s one more ally LJP demanded a special industrial package for e Bihar.
Meanwhile, BJP President JP Nadda has planned to organize a chaired meeting with the MPs of NDA after the completion of the tabulation of the economic survey.
BJD’s Samit Patra criticized that the present government has not fulfilled any of the promises mentioned in the 2014 manifesto including granting special category status to Odisha.
