Xi Jinping Set to Visit US in June Amid Heightened Trade Tensions with Trump

Amid the trade tension between China and the US, Chinese President Xi Jinping is set to visit the US in June as suggested by President Trump

The US putting tariffs on China since Trumps arrival in January and China has backed up either. The Tit-for-tat chain might halt as both the countries have a crucial diplomatic discussion in Washington, this June as reported by The Wall Street Journal.

Both nations have discussed scheduling a political summit in Washington. This was confirmed by President Trump at the Kennedy Centre for the Performing Arts in Washington, referring to Xi Jinping He’ll be coming in the not-too-distant future,” as said by AFP.

There were reports of Trump visiting China in April, although no official dates were provided.

The Tensions

The meeting is crucial due to rising tensions between countries stemming from Trump’s implementation of tariffs. This situation particularly affects nations like Mexico, Canada, and China, as it centers on addressing trade inequalities and insufficient control over the distribution of lethal fentanyl.

The U.S. increased its overall tariff on goods from 10 percent to 20 percent. In response, China imposed a 15 percent duty on American agricultural products, including soybeans, pork, and chicken. Additionally, China announced that it would take all necessary measures in reaction to the new American tariffs on aluminum and steel.

China’s response has been characterized as a failure to crack down on the flow of illegal fentanyl and precursor chemicals by Trump. To which the foreign minister replied, The US is spreading all kinds of false information on the fentanyl issue, smearing and scapegoating China, and hiking tariffs on Chinese imports over fentanyl. Such moves are unjustified and will do no one good, on March 5.

China-US relations

During Trump’s first term, he claimed to have established a strong rapport with two presidents. Despite this, he initiated a trade war with the Chinese government over what he described as unfair economic practices. In 2018, he signed a directive imposing a 25% tariff on Chinese goods.

Since then, especially in his second term, he has escalated his tariff measures against China. However, Trump now advocates for both nations to solve all the world problems together but continues to escalate the trade war with the country.

The meeting confirmation?

The initial meeting was proposed to be at Trumps Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, but Beijing preferred more diplomatic settings or inviting Trump to China, as reported by the South China Morning Post. Other than this, there has been no official itinerary announced for the pivotal meet of these world leaders.
