    • Reasons may include ‘Scheduling Issues’.
    • PCB (Pakistan Cricket Board), however, has downplayed any controversy.
    • Cancellation could have been due to the soaring pollution levels in Lahore.
    • The tournament is expected to get played from Feb 19 to March 19, 2025.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has cancelled an event related to the upcoming Champions Trophy in Pakistan due to ‘scheduling issues’.

This comes after reports of India deciding not to travel to Pakistan for the tournament; and, the PCB’s chief Mohsin Naqvi’s statement saying ‘not ready to accept hybrid model.’

The cancelled event, where ICC was expected to flag off the tournament officially, has now been put on hold. It will be decided and declared until the situation is sorted out.

Meanwhile, Rashid Latif slams India for not travelling to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy. He shares that ‘Security concern is not there.’

“The schedule is not confirmed, we are still in discussions with the host and participating nations on the Champions Trophy schedule. Once confirmed we will announce through our normal channels,” said the report citing an official as a source in the know of things.

The PCB, however, has downplayed the controversy and a source in the same report hinted that the cancellation could have been due to the soaring pollution levels in Lahore.

“It was only a trophy tour flag off and tournament/branding launch,” said an official in Cricbuzz report. “That (the event) is still in the works — though may be rescheduled because of Lahore outdoor activities are difficult right now,” the source further added.

The scheduling conflict was expected as both India and Pakistan do not play bilateral cricket due to political tensions. Last year, India had refused to travel to Pakistan for the regional Asia Cup as well but Pakistan travelled to India for the ODI World Cup which followed soon after.

A report in the Indian media has stated that India is perhaps not willing to travel to Pakistan and is instead seeking Dubai, UAE, as the option to play its matches.

Naqvi, however, has shared that there has been no official communication from Board of Control for Cricket India (BCCI) regarding India not coming to play the ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) is the global governing body of cricket. It was founded 115 years ago as the Imperial Cricket Conference in 1909 by representatives from Australia, England, and South Africa. It was renamed as the International Cricket Conference in 1965 and adopted its current name in 1987. The ICC has its headquarters in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

The ICC currently has 108 member nations: 12 Full Members who play Test matches and 96 Associate Members. It is responsible for the organization and governance of cricket’s major international tournaments, most notably the Cricket World Cup, T20 World Cup, and ICC World Test Championship. It also appoints the umpires and referees who officiate at all sanctioned Test matches, One-Day Internationals, and Twenty20 Internationals.

It promulgates the ICC Code of Conduct, which sets professional standards of discipline for international cricket, and also co-ordinates action against corruption and match-fixing through its Anti-Corruption and Security Unit (ACSU).

The ICC does not control bilateral fixtures between member countries (which include all Test matches outside of the World Test Championship Final), and neither does it govern domestic cricket within member countries. It does not make or alter the laws of the game, which have remained under the governance of the Marylebone Cricket Club since 1788. The Chairman heads the board of directors.

The 12 governing bodies of teams that have full voting rights within the International Cricket Council and play official Test matches are from England; Australia; South Africa; West Indies; New Zealand; India; Pakistan; Sri Lanka; Zimbabwe; Bangladesh; Ireland; and, Afghanistan.
