A recent statement by a South Korean MP revealed that at least 100 North Korean soldiers have been killed while fighting for Russia in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. The statement also noted that over 1,000 soldiers got injured, during the intense war in the Kursk region. The exact count is not disclosed by the authorities, yet.
Lee Sung-kwon, a South Korean member of the National Assembly, disclosed the details following a statement by the countrys intelligence officials. Lee stated that approx. 100 soldiers of North Korea were killed including high-ranking officers. He further added that this high count of casualties was a result of the North Korean forces’ unfamiliarity with the terrain and their lack of experience in drone warfare, which has become a crucial element of the conflict.
This also marks the first significant estimate of North Korean losses, following Ukraine’s announcement weeks earlier that North Korea sent between 10,000 and 12,000 troops to support Russia. Another statement from the White House and Pentagon reveals that North Korean forces have been engaged in the front lines primarily in combat positions. The forces have been battling alongside Russian units, and in some situations alone around Kursk.
North Korea’s involvement in Ukraine conflict was observed in October. The news that North Korea has deployed 10,000 troops to Russia was shared. Among them were soldiers who had no combat experience, were first placed in Russia for training. Following the proper training, they were positioned in their roles.
However, despite the training, North Koreans were struggling to adapt to the battlefield particularly in areas like the Kursk region, where heavy fighting continues.
Reports cited that North Korean troops had not been stationed on the frontlines, where Russian forces were advancing. This also led to significant difficulties for North Koreans in adapting. to modern warfare. One of the primary challenges is their lack of exposure to drone warfare tactics.
According to reports, Lee stated that forces are being used as expendable frontline units in Russias operations. This strategy, coupled with their limited understanding of drone warfare, has made them more of a liability than an asset. Complaints have emerged within the Russian military regarding the ineffectiveness of the North Korean troops.
