Doordarshan Refuses Telecast of Sir Syed Ahmed Khan Biopic

Throughout history, many individuals have silently brought about significant transformations in society, yet their stories remain largely unheard. These change-makers have worked tirelessly, shaping the future without seeking recognition or fame. However, the potential of multimedia to shed light on their contributions is immense.

By narrating their stories, media platforms can ensure that the legacy of these reformers is preserved and appreciated. One such remarkable figure is Sir Syed Ahmed Khan, the visionary founder of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU). His life and work have been recently portrayed in a biopic, yet the films journey to reach Indian audiences has encountered unexpected roadblocks.

The Biopic on Sir Syed Ahmed Khan and His Struggles

A biopic titled Sir Syed Ahmed Khan: The Messiah was recently released, capturing the life and struggles of the great reformer. The film was unveiled on the AMU campus by Vice-Chancellor Naima Khatoon with great enthusiasm. However, despite its historical and educational significance, the national broadcaster Doordarshan has declined to telecast the film on its channel or stream it on its OTT platform. This decision has sparked disappointment among historians, academicians, and admirers of Sir Syeds contributions to Indian society.

Prasar Bharati officially communicated its decision to the Mumbai-based Dark Horse Productions, the production house behind the film. In a letter to the production company, the Programme Executive of Prasar Bharati stated, “I am directed to inform you that your proposal offering program(s) based on Sir Syed Ahmed Khan could not qualify for telecast/stream under the Revenue Sharing Mode (RSM) on PBs upcoming OTT platform.” The rejection of the biopic, despite its cultural and historical importance, has left many questioning the criteria used by the national broadcaster.

It is indeed disheartening that the story of a visionary who revolutionized education in India and empowered generations of students is not being given the platform it deserves. Sir Syed Ahmed Khans dedication to education and reform was instrumental in shaping modern India, and his journey needs to be widely shared to inspire the youth.

Shoaib Chaudhary Expresses Disappointment

Shoaib Chaudhary, the producer and lead actor of the biopic, has voiced his frustration over Doordarshans decision. Chaudhary, who has previously produced content for the national broadcaster, highlighted that one of his earlier serials was among the longest-running shows in Doordarshans history. He lamented that a biopic produced and acted by him is now being rejected by the same platform.

He further stated that the rejection appears to be influenced by political factors rather than content quality. They have rejected the biopic to please their political masters, he remarked. His disappointment echoes the sentiments of many who believe that educational and reformist figures like Sir Syed should be celebrated rather than sidelined.

Plot and Significance of the Biopic

The film primarily revolves around Sir Syed Ahmed Khans relentless efforts to establish the Mohammedan Anglo-Oriental (MAO) College, which later became Aligarh Muslim University in 1920. The narrative sheds light on the numerous challenges he faced while advocating for scientific education among Muslims in colonial India. His visionary approach towards education and social reform played a crucial role in modernizing Indian society.

Sir Syeds contributions have been acknowledged by prominent leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who referred to AMU as “a mini India” during the universitys centenary celebrations. The biopic, by portraying his struggles and achievements, aims to educate the new generation about the power of knowledge and the importance of social reform.

Mudassir Hayat, President of the AMU Old Boys Association, Delhi NCR, emphasized the need for such a film to reach the public. The life story of a legend like Sir Syed must be shown to the country, especially to its new generation. This biopic can dispel many misconceptions and inspire young minds to use education as a tool for progress, he stated.
