Elon Musk’s Latest Criticism of Wikipedia: Calls for Defunding
Share
Elon Musk has once again taken aim at Wikipedia, urging his followers to stop donating to the online encyclopedia until what he perceives as “balance” is restored. The billionaires comments follow a contentious period during which Wikipedia reportedly described a gesture he made at Donald Trumps post-inauguration event as resembling a Nazi salute. Musk has strongly denied the accusations, calling them “dirty tricks.”
The controversy began when a page on Wikipedia compared Musks gesture to the infamous Nazi salute, sparking widespread debate. Musk, known for his prolific activity on X (formerly Twitter), dismissed the claim, writing, “Frankly, they need better dirty tricks,” and adding, “The everyone is Hitler attack is sooo tired .”
Musks discontent with Wikipedia extends beyond this specific incident. He has previously criticized the Wikimedia Foundation, the non-profit organization behind Wikipedia, for its allocation of funds toward Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs. In a recent post on X, Musk called on his nearly 210 million followers to Defund Wikipedia until balance is restored! In another post, he referred to the platform as Wokepedia, echoing sentiments shared by certain right-wing figures who claim the site has a political bias.
Musks critique has brought renewed attention to Wikipedias fundraising practices. The platform, which operates without ads, relies on donations to maintain its vast database of free, user-generated content. Recently, however, some users have expressed frustration over the increasing frequency of donation appeals on the site. Musks comments have added fuel to this fire, with his posts amplifying concerns about how theWikimedia Foundationallocates its funds.
In one of his posts, Musk responded to a message from the right-wing account Libs of TikTok by saying, Stop donating to Wokepedia until they restore balance to their editing authority. His remarks suggest a belief that Wikipedias editorial decisions and funding priorities reflect a broader political agenda.
Central to Musks criticisms is the Wikimedia Foundations focus on DEI initiatives, which aim to foster inclusivity and representation across its global platform. While these efforts have been praised by many as essential to creating a more equitable online space, they have also faced backlash from critics who argue that such programs prioritize ideology over neutrality. Musks statements tap into this broader debate, aligning with those who claim Wikipedias content has become increasingly partisan.
Musks call to defund Wikipedia underscores his willingness to leverage his massive social media following to challenge institutions he views as flawed. However, his critics argue that his comments risk undermining the credibility of a resource relied upon by millions for free and accessible information. Wikipedia, despite its imperfections, remains one of the most visited websites in the world, with over six billion monthly page views.
