Following the footsteps of his father, Aaryavir Sehwag, son of the former Indian cricket icon, Virender Sehwag, has marked a stellar performance against Meghalaya in the U-19 Cooch Behar Trophy. The match was held on Thursday, November 21, 2024, at the MCA Cricket Ground in Shillong. It was a four-day cricket tournament for the Under-19 players organized by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
Chose to bat first, Meghalaya posted a score of 260 runs total in the first innings of the match. In response, Delhi took a huge lead with 208 runs by the end of the second day. The team scored 468 for 2 in 81 overs, with Aaryavir Sehwag being the double centurion of the match.
Opening the innings with Arnav Bugga, their partnership was instrumental in setting up Delhis commanding position against the opponent. Aaryavir’s performance lasted close to a triple century, scoring a stunning 297 runs off 309 balls featuring 51 fours and three sixes. His boundary percentage was 74.75%.
While Arnav Bagga contributed 114 runs off 108 balls, Dhanya Nakra was another unbeaten player in the match, scoring 98 runs off 91 balls.
Additionally, Aaryavir made his debut in the Vinoo Mankad Trophy against Manipur in October this year. He scored 49 runs and helped Delhi win the match by six wickets.
His impressive performances not only highlight his potential but also reflect the generational brilliance and legacy of his father in the cricketing world. His strike rate was 96.12, underscoring his dominance over the Meghalaya players.
Aaryavir Sehwag is the elder son of the former cricketing legend Virender Sehwag, widely recognized as one of the most remarkable players in cricketing history. Born in 2007, Aaryavir, following his fathers footsteps, Aaryavir has developed his interest in cricket. Despite being a teenage player, he has continued to leave an indelible mark in his age-group tournaments.
He is known for his aggressive approach and fearless batting style. His style to dominate the opponents with aggressive stroke play draws similar comparisons to his fathers batting style.
Talking about his son, Virender Sehwag has openly supported his son for his cricketing ambitions; he shared that Aaryavir has been working hard to make his mark, with a long-term goal earning a spot in the IPL.
My son is 15 years old and is already working hard to get a chance to play in the IPL, he told in an interview last year.
He further also shared that the IPL (Indian Premier League) has benefited young talent the most. Earlier, nobody got noticed from Ranji Trophy performances and hence couldn’t make it to the Indian team now. If you perform well in the IPL and you showcase your talent, then immediately you get an opportunity to play for the Indian team. Because of the IPL, so many children from smaller states and countries have started taking cricket seriously and try their best to participate in the IPL and strive hard, he added.
