The Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir Omar Abdullah met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday, October 24, 2024, in New Delhi. Notably, this was Omar Abdullahs inaugural visit to the national capital.

During his inaugural visit, he presented a cabinet resolution to the PM by the Jammu and Kashmir Cabinet. It calls for the restoration of statehood to Union Territory.

Ongoing Conflicts in Jammu and Kashmir

The meeting comes with the backdrop of the recent terrorist attack at Baramulla Butapathri in Gulmarg. The shocking part of this army vehicle attack is that it is being targeted at the region, which is largely considered a terrorism-free zone.

During the attack, two soldiers and two porters were killed, and three others were left injured. This was reportedly the second attack that occurred in the Union Territory within the last 72 hours. Three days earlier, six construction workers and a doctor were killed after terrorists targeted a housing camp construction worker building a tunnel in Ganderbal district.

Omar Abdullah, the newly elected CM condemned the attack. He called it a “dastardly and cowardly attack on non-local laborers. They were working on a key infrastructure project. I strongly condemn this attack on unarmed innocent people and send my condolences to their loved ones, he said.

Security Situation Discussion with Modi

The army vehicle attack took place when Chief Minister Omar Abdullah was meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi. During this 30-minute meeting, CM Abdullah explained to PM about the law-and-order situation in the Union Territory. He also submitted a cabinet proposal to Modi to grant statehood to Jammu and Kashmir as soon as possible.

This resolution given to PM Modi was passed by Abdullahs cabinet last week. It urged the Central Government to restore Jammu and Kashmirs Statehood in its original form.

According to the officials, this is a crucial step towards initiating a healing process, reinstating constitutional rights, and safeguarding the unique identity of the regions residents.

During the meeting, Omar Abdullah also presented the PM with a shawl. The resolution was approved by J&K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha.

Besides the PM, Chief Minister Abdullah also met Defense Minister Rajnath Singh and Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari. He informed the ministers about issues concerning the execution of road connectivity projects in J&K.

CM Abdullahs Meeting with Amit Shah

A day before the meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Omar Abdullah also met with Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The meeting took place following a tragic attack which took place in Ganderbal district.

In the wake of this incident, Abdullah stressed the need to heighten vigilance among security forces. Now the administration, especially the police and security forces, will have to maintain their alert level even more and ensure that such attacks do not take place,” he stated.

Further, on the resolution for the restoration of statehood in the region, Union Minister Amit Shah assured Abdullah of the central governments support for the newly elected state.
